S.O.D.A. - Start Of the Day Activity
Share these brainteasers with someone in your bubble. You will probably find that people will have different answers to the same question so talk each person's answers through and see if you can come to an answer.
Mike is a butcher. He is 5’10” tall. What does he weigh?
A farmer has 17 sheep and all but nine die. How many are left?
In a year, there are 12 months. Seven months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?
Jimmy’s mother had four children. She named the first Monday. She named the second Tuesday, and she named the third Wednesday. What is the name of the fourth child?
Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?
I do not have any special powers, but I can predict the score of any football game before it begins. How can I do this?

Reading to a Buddy
Read to a pet or your favourite toy! Use lots of expression when you are reading so they understand what the text is about. Remember, it doesn't need to be a book - you might be helping in the kitchen by reading the recipe to someone as they cook/bake or you might be reading the instructions of how to make something. Sometimes instructions don't have words and you need to 'read' the pictures - that's a great skill to practice too!
Listening to Reading
Working with Words
Complete today's handwriting.
Today's focus is the oa combination. Use the photo and video below to help you. You can borrow my sentence or create your own that uses as many words with our letter combination as possible (you can find words by doing a Google search).

This week our focus for writing is on how to record the speech of characters correctly in your writing.
First, you need to create some characters who have something to say! Make sure you have done yesterday's Character Conversations activity (you will need to scroll down to the Working on Writing activity).

Seeing you worked so well on the first day, the team at Awesome Pizzeria want you back! Draw your pizzas on paper or in Google Draw and share them with us.
How did you go solving the word problem from yesterday? Here is my solution . . . do you agree with my answer? The ticket costs $20 because 1/3 of $30 is $10 and the ticket was 2/3 so would be $20. This leaves Aleena with $10. She spent $7 on souvenirs because 1/10 of $10 is $1 and she spent 7/10 which would be $7. This leaves Aleena with $3. She spent $2 on snacks because 1/3 of $3 is $1 and she spent 2/3 which would be $2. This leaves Aleena $1 to go home with. |

Showcasing New Zealand
New Zealand is represented at Expo 2020 Dubai, an international event in the United Arab Emirates celebrating the things that make each country unique and sharing it with the world.
You are part of the team creating the showcase for this event. The showcase needs to include information for visitors about New Zealand's flora (plant) and fauna (bird and animal) taonga (natural treasures).
Part One
Choose a native bird, animal/mammal, reptile, insect, spider, plant, flower or tree to become the expert on for the showcase. Use a Google search to help you decide what you will become an expert on. Do some initial inquiry about your chosen taonga (on Thursday, information about what you will need to investigate will be posted).
When you have chosen your taonga, please let me know so I can help you with some sources of information. Either let me know at the next Google Meet or send me an email.
Check out the information below so that you are sure your choice is endemic or native to New Zealand and not introduced.

Part Two
Now that you have chosen your taonga, let's do some thinking.
Create a T-chart like the one below. On the left-hand side record what you know already about your taonga. On the right-hand side record what you would like to know (think about what will be important to know to share with visitors to the expo as the expert about your taonga).
