Reading to a Buddy
Read to someone in your family. Remember, it doesn't need to be a book - you might be helping in the kitchen by reading the recipe to someone as they cook/bake or you might be reading the instructions of how to make something. Sometimes instructions don't have words and you need to 'read' the pictures - that's a great skill to practice too!
Listening to Reading
Listen to a story or two on Storyline Online.
Working with Words
Complete today's handwriting.
Today's focus is the oo combination. Use the photo and video below to help you. You can borrow my sentence or create your own that uses as many words with our letter combination as possible.

Spelling - today's activity is Double Up. Use your ten list words
Typing Club - many of you have set goals around improving your typing skills. Typing Club is a great way to do this! Spend 10-15 minutes exploring how Typing Club works.
To log in you need to be using your school Google account (eg [email protected]) and click this Typing Club link. If you are not using your Google account you will be asked to enter it - this joins you to our class.

Well done Mahtaab, Triya, Cassie, Briar, Alaina, Aggelos, Marlee and Maddie for spending some time last week working on your typing skills!
This writing task has been something that we have been building on each day. You need to complete each section in order. Clicking on the date below will link you to the activity (you will need to scroll down to it on that particular day).
29th April - Character Conversations
30th April - turning speech bubbles into text
1st May - describing the scene
When you have each of these, you now need to work on putting the full piece of writing together, including your character conversations and your description of the scene.
Add a problem within your piece of writing to make it a narrative piece of writing which tells a made up story. Use these models to help you put your piece of writing together.

If I can give you a tip . . . write some, go away and do something else for 15-20 minutes then come back and read what you have done and write some more. Don't be afraid to add to what you already have or make changes to it to improve your writing.
I would expect that you will be working on this for a couple of days.
And remember - doing some of your own free writing is totally ok too!

Daily 3 (Maths)
Basic Facts
Practice your basic facts using fact triangles.
Choose your times table and practice your families of facts like the example above. The best order to learn your tables is 2s, 5s, 10s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 11s, 12s.
Either choose a different times table or practice different facts from the same times table.

Fractions
There has been lots of great work happening with fractions! Log in to eAko maths to practice this and your basic facts - your username and password is on your sheet from school. Go to Number Facts (you should see a flag on it).
Statistics
eAko maths has some great activities related to Statistics too. Log in and go to Probability and Statistics (you should see a flag on it, like the Number facts one).
To get good data for your statistical investigation you need to make sure you ask good questions. Complete this worksheet to help you understand what a good question would be.
Prodigy
Log in to your Prodigy account (it's on your log in sheet from school) and take on the fractions based challenges that have been loaded. Well done Alec, Triya and Kairo who are 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the leaderboard for this week! |

Showcasing New Zealand
New Zealand is represented at Expo 2020 Dubai, an international event in the United Arab Emirates celebrating the things that make each country unique and sharing it with the world.
You are part of the team creating the showcase for this event. The showcase needs to include information for visitors about New Zealand's flora (plant) and fauna (bird and animal) taonga (natural treasures).
Part One
Awesome! I think just about everyone has chosen their taonga! This is great because it means I can send you information or links to sites to help you with your investigation. You will find the files in the Shared with Me part of your Drive.

Part Two
Now that you have chosen your taonga, let's do some thinking.
Create a T-chart like the one below. On the left-hand side record what you know already about your taonga. On the right-hand side record what you would like to know (think about what will be important to know to share with visitors to the expo as the expert about your taonga).

Part Three
Know it's time to investigate! Take the things that you want to know and find information to answer your questions. As the expert, you will need to know things like where your taonga is found, what it needs to survive, what it looks like, sounds like or feels like, where it lives, if it is famous for anything and interesting facts about your chosen taonga. You might find out information about how many are left in New Zealand and any projects that are underway to help save them if they are endangered.
When you are recording your information you need to practice note taking. This is when you pick out the key words and record these instead of just copying what another person has written (if you are just copying and pasting it won't help you to become an expert because you won't remember the information).

Here are some different ways you can take your notes - you just need to record the key words and when you create your presentation you will 'fill in the gaps' to make it make sense.
Use Tic-Tac-Toe note-taking to keep key words about certain topics together. Make each part of the Tic-Tac-Toe grid a different topic you are collecting information about (eg what it looks like in one section, where it lives in another section, etc)
Make this data gathering chart bigger to include more boxes to get the information that you need.
Collecting this information will take a few sessions - I do not expect you to do it all at once!
Part Four
The rubric below gives you an idea of how detailed your information should be.

When you are collecting your information you might want to think about how you are going to present it as the expert at Expo 2020 Dubai.
You could make a book, a pamphlet, a poster, a Google Slide, a Google Site (like your blog), a video, write a song or a combination of these things . . . the choice is yours and you can have someone in your bubble help you.
