This week's writing has built on the previous day. If you haven't started the character conversations from earlier in the week you need to do that first. Go to 29 April and 30 April to see what you need to do. Your next part it use your descriptive writing skills to show your writer the scene that you chose for the character conversations. Use describing words (eg colour, size, shape, texture, the five senses) to describe the scene where your character conversation takes place. You need to write to show don't tell the reader about the scene. |
Remember, doing some of your own free writing is totally ok too! Briar's Google Meet was treated to a wonderful story yesterday that she had written - lots of claps and thumbs up all round! Share these with us in your Meet or through your Teacher Check folder.

Showcasing New Zealand
New Zealand is represented at Expo 2020 Dubai, an international event in the United Arab Emirates celebrating the things that make each country unique and sharing it with the world.
You are part of the team creating the showcase for this event. The showcase needs to include information for visitors about New Zealand's flora (plant) and fauna (bird and animal) taonga (natural treasures).
Part One
Choose a native bird, animal/mammal, reptile, insect, spider, plant, flower or tree to become the expert on for the showcase. Use a Google search to help you decide what you will become an expert on. Do some initial inquiry about your chosen taonga (on Thursday, information about what you will need to investigate will be posted).
When you have chosen your taonga, please let me know so I can help you with some sources of information. Either let me know at the next Google Meet or send me an email.
Check out the information below so that you are sure your choice is endemic or native to New Zealand and not introduced.

Part Two
Now that you have chosen your taonga, let's do some thinking.
Create a T-chart like the one below. On the left-hand side record what you know already about your taonga. On the right-hand side record what you would like to know (think about what will be important to know to share with visitors to the expo as the expert about your taonga).

Part Three
Know it's time to investigate! Take the things that you want to know and find information to answer your questions. As the expert, you will need to know things like where your taonga is found, what it needs to survive, what it looks like, sounds like or feels like, where it lives, if it is famous for anything and interesting facts about your chosen taonga. You might find out information about how many are left in New Zealand and any projects that are underway to help save them if they are endangered.
When you are recording your information you need to practice note taking. This is when you pick out the key words and record these instead of just copying what another person has written (if you are just copying and pasting it won't help you to become an expert because you won't remember the information).

Here are some different ways you can take your notes - you just need to record the key words and when you create your presentation you will 'fill in the gaps' to make it make sense.
Use Tic-Tac-Toe note-taking to keep key words about certain topics together. Make each part of the Tic-Tac-Toe grid a different topic you are collecting information about (eg what it looks like in one section, where it lives in another section, etc)
Make this data gathering chart bigger to include more boxes to get the information that you need.
